In light of President Obama's recent press conference we are asking you to stand tall against any further debt limit increase without significant spending cuts. The President used his bully pulpit to say the debt ceiling has nothing to do with spending and it only allows the government to pay its bills. Nonsense, in 1939 the debt ceiling was enacted to do exactly what its name implies, (limit the debt) and that means cut spending to reduce the bone crushing debt burden being placed on the backs of the American people.
The President says those who would negotiate for spending cuts are extreme. Since when is it extreme for Congress to safeguard the people's money from the great danger associated with excessive public debt? The word extreme seems to more appropriately describe the President's out-of-control spending binge. It is quite reasonable and frankly Congress's responsibility to demand significant spending cuts in exchange for raising the debt ceiling.
The president has said previous votes never contained the cut-spending linkage and that of course is baloney. The president himself, as a Senator, refused to vote to raise the debt ceiling under President Bush. He called the debt at that time “irresponsible” and "unpatriotic" because it burdened today's children with $30,000 in debt. That was more than six trillion dollars ago and on his watch our kid's burden is now over $50,000 each and rising everyday.
We The People Ohio Valley hold true to our core values of limited government and fiscal responsibility and that means the government should not be spending our children and grand children’s future by borrowing money from China to continue this reckless spending binge. We believe it is immoral to place this horrendous debt burden on the future children of this great nation.
Most Americans learn early that the only way to stop a bully is to stand up to them, to face their fears, to be willing to make sure the bully knows he has been challenged. We are asking you to take that stand now, stand up to President Obama and use all of the resources at your disposal including your vote to say no debt limit hike without significant debt reduction, (emphasis added). You owe it to your children as well as our children to do the right thing and take a bold and moral position by demanding substantial debt reduction.
In closing we ask you to consider the wisdom of our founding fathers and in the quiet of your deliberations ponder the message Thomas Jefferson left for us when he said:
"I, however, place economy among the first and most important republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared."
